To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative average of 95 in core subject areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, and English) for the previous school year at Hernando Middle School. Additionally, candidates must meet high standards of leadership, service, citizenship, and character.
Students initiated in the 2021 school year still remain chapter members.
Students eligible for initiation this school year were inducted on September 20, 2022.

The HMS chapter of NJHS has pledged to work hard and bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers, and the community Our chapter, along with more than 6,000 chapters across the nation, strives to give practical meaning to the Society's standards of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. These five ideals are the basis for student selection for NJHS. The goal of NJHS is to recognize the total student- one who excels in all of these areas.

Membership is more than an honor. It incurs a responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate these outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. A student's membership also carries duty to the chapter. In order to be fully effective, our chapter members must be involved in meetings, group or community service projects, and individual service projects.
